Nonetheless, there remains an urgent need to engage the untapped potential of citizens around the world. Nearly one half of the world’s population lives on less than $2/day. Helping them increase their income is a critical step in lifting individuals and communities out of poverty. Furthermore, most of the 3+ billion people in the world living at or below the economic poverty level face significant barriers: not only do they lack access to markets and financial services, they also pay higher prices for goods and services than the rest of the world’s population.
