Facing Global Challenges: The Role of the Media The Deutsche Welle Global Media Forum is a congress with international reach. Having steadily grown since its launch in 2008, more than 2,000 people from 115 nations attended the most recent conference in June 2012. The forum draws media representatives from around the world and people from the fields of politics, culture, business, development cooperation and academia. Together they discuss and design approaches to meeting the challengesv of globalization in which the media play a central role. Many organizations and institutions are involved in the panel discussions, workshops, interactive presentations and exhibitions.
Hivos is an international development organisation guided by humanist values. Together with local civil society organisations in developing countries, Hivos wants to contribute to a free, fair and sustainable world. A world in which all citizens – both women and men – have equal access to opportunities and resources for development and can participate actively and equally in decision-making processes that determine their lives, their society and their future. Hivos trusts in the creativity and capacity of people. Quality, cooperation and innovation are core values in Hivos’ programme development and business philosophies. Hivos is committed to people in Africa, Asia and Latin America who are systematically blocked from rights, opportunities and resources. MICT - Media in Cooperation and Transition is a German non-profit organization that implements media development projects in the Middle East and Northern Africa. Activities focus on the interplay between conflict, media coverage and reconciliation in crisis regions. MICT's services comprise the training of journalists and media producers, program and content development, production of radio programs, films and books, as well as media research and monitoring in conflict regions. At the MICT headquarters in Berlin, an international team of 15 full-time staff members coordinates MICT's activities in the different countries in which MICT operates. All projects are implemented in close cooperation with our partners on site. Through its activities, MICT aims to foster the transformation of conflict towards reconciliation, and encourage dialogue among conflicting factions within society. The focal point is the interaction and interdependence of media and conflict. Supporting media cooperation, media networking and media development, as well as capacity building in the field of journalism is recognized as the key factor in conflict transition. MICT is financed and supported by the Belgian Foreign Ministry, the German Foreign Office, the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, UNESCO, UNIFEM, UNAMI, the Government of Canada, and the Amman Centre for Human Rights Studies.
DW Akademie is committed to promoting diversity of opinion around the world. Media development, media training and journalism education programs are among the many services provided by Deutsche Welle’s training center. In today’s world, media and communications play a crucial role. They can inflame conflicts or defuse them. They can inform people or mislead them. They can serve as a mouthpiece for despots or give a voice to the voiceless.
